First Impressions from a Newcomer to the Mecha Universe
At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from GUNDAM: Requiem for Vengeance. Lately, some of Netflix’s new releases have been a bit underwhelming, so I was cautiously optimistic. I’ve known about the GUNDAM franchise for years—it’s one of those iconic names that has always been around—but, to be honest, I had never watched any of the previous series or movies. With this release, I figured it was time to dive in and see what the hype was all about.
And I’m so glad I did! This series really surprised me, and in the best way possible.
Plot Overview
GUNDAM: Requiem for Vengeance is set in the well-known GUNDAM universe, where humanity is divided between colonies in space and Earth, locked in a fierce conflict over control and survival. At the heart of the story is a group of rebels determined to fight back against their oppressors, piloting colossal mechs known as Mobile Suits. As the story unfolds, we follow these characters through intense battles and emotional struggles, all while they navigate a world rife with political tension and moral dilemmas. The show blends explosive action with deeper themes like rebellion, oppression, and personal sacrifice, giving it layers beyond just robot battles.
My Thoughts on the Series
I’ll admit, I went into the series with low expectations. I figured this would just be another flashy but forgettable Netflix attempt at reviving a beloved franchise. But after a couple of episodes, I was hooked. The storyline is engaging and kept me invested all the way through. The characters feel well-developed, and there’s a sense of urgency in the plot that makes you want to keep watching.
The animation is absolutely stunning. Every battle scene is beautifully executed, with smooth movements and dynamic camera angles that make the fights feel intense and real. The attention to detail in the Mobile Suits is incredible, and the show gives you plenty of jaw-dropping moments to enjoy. The combat scenes are exhilarating, and as someone who enjoys movies like Pacific Rim or Godzilla, I found the giant mech fights thrilling. If you’re into stories featuring massive robots clashing in epic battles, this series is definitely for you.
Watching GUNDAM: Requiem for Vengeance has also inspired me to explore the older GUNDAM content, especially the classic series from the 1980s. If this show is any indication of what the franchise has to offer, I’ve got a lot to look forward to. It’s rare that a show pulls me in so quickly, but this one did it effortlessly.
What really stood out to me was the way the show balanced action with meaningful dialogue. One of my favorite quotes from the series perfectly captures the theme of resistance:
“They’re out there doing whatever the hell they want to whoever they want. You oppress people long enough, they’re gonna fight back.”
That line sums up the essence of the story—people rising against tyranny when they’ve been pushed too far. It adds emotional weight to the battles, making the action scenes feel more than just eye candy.
By the end of the season, I was already hoping for more. This series has left me excited for what comes next, and I really hope they continue building on the story with a second season. Until then, I might dive into the older GUNDAM series to fill the void.
Should You Watch It?
Absolutely! Whether you’re a seasoned GUNDAM fan or someone new to the franchise, Requiem for Vengeance is a fantastic entry point. The animation, gripping storyline, and intense battles make it a must-watch. The series offers more than just robot fights—it delivers an emotional and thought-provoking experience that will keep you invested from start to finish.
If you love sci-fi adventures, giant robots, or anything in the vein of Pacific Rim, this series will definitely appeal to you. The combination of stunning visuals and a well-crafted story makes it one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve watched in a while. It’s safe to say that GUNDAM: Requiem for Vengeance has earned a spot on my list of favorites, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
